२९ जुलै रोजी नुकताच 'जागतिक वाघ्य्र दिवस' साजरा करण्यात आला. मांजरवर्गीयांमधील सगळ्यात मोठा प्राणी म्हणजे वाघ. सिंहाला आपण जंगलाचा राजा म्हणून ओळखतो पण त्याच्याच तोडीस तोड असणारा प्राणी म्हणजे वाघ... सिंह आपल्याला एकटाच दिसतो तर वाघ आपल्या कुटुंबासमवेत जंगलात फिरताना दिसतो. जंगलात त्याची ऐटच भारी!! वाघ हा भारताचा राष्ट्रीय प्राणी तर आहेच शिवाय जंगलाच्या राजापेक्षा त्याचा तोरा कमी नसतो. त्यामुळे त्याच्या गौरवार्थ व वाघांबद्दलच्या जनजागृतीसाठी २९ जुलै २०१० पासून सर्व देशांमध्ये 'जागतिक वाघ्य्र दिवस' साजरा करण्यात येतो.  वाघ हे त्यांच्या क्षेत्राबाबत फार संवेदनशील असतात. त्यांना आपल्या क्षेत्रात कोणीही आलेले आवडत नाही. दुसरा प्राणी आलाच तर त्याच्यावर ते तुटून पडायलाही मागे पुढे पाहत नाहीत. अशा या वाघाच्या नैसर्गिक संवर्धनासाठी जागतिक पातळीवर प्रयत्न करणे, त्यांच्या संवर्धनासाठी येणाऱ्या समस्यांवर विचार करणे आणि त्याबद्दल जनजागृती करणे हे या वाघ्य्र दिनाचे उद्द्येश्य आहेत. जंगलातील सगळ्यात शक्तिशाली, बुद्धिवान आणि हुशार प्राण्यांमध्ये वाघाचे नाव पहिलेच घ्यावे लागेल.
